Johns Hopkins University Sr. Research Assistant in Baltimore, Maryland

The Johns Hopkins University, Kanold Laboratory is seeking to hire a Sr. Research Assistant within the within the Department of Biomedical Engineering who will conduct research pertaining to experience circuit changes in the brain. The Sr. Research Assistant will be responsible for performing in vitro brain slice experiments from prefrontal and auditory cortex. Key skills include technical skills for animal surgery, brain slice preparation, electrophysiological data collection, laser-scanning photo stimulation, signal processing skills for data cleaning and analysis.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Data Acquisition and Analysis

  • Perform brain slice electrophysiology.

  • Perform laser-scanning photo stimulation.

  • Perform data management, statistical programming, and data analysis. Understand the importance/impact of data integrity in terms of physiological data.

  • Prepare materials for IRB to include completing progress reports, adverse event forms, changes in research.

  • Design and set-up standard operating procedures for one or more studies.

  • Participate in developing study budget.

  • Interact regularly with members of the research team/study to provide appropriate statistical input in the design, execution and analysis of studies.

  • Oversee day-to-day activities of the lab.

  • Participation in many aspects of publications including data set preparation, data validation, implementation of analytic plans, report generation, and written and oral presentations.

  • Assist with composing and submitting manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication of research.

  • Extract relevant information from data.

  • Use statistical analytics to complete analyses.

  • Adhere to guidelines regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential information.

  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

  • Maintain mouse colony.

  • Prepare brain slices from different cortical regions.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Highly proficient computer skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Planning and organizational skills, ability to prioritize work independently.

  • Working knowledge of databases and statistical software for data analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.

  • Two years of related experience

  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MPH or MS in relevant field.

  • PhD Degree.

  • Data management and analysis experience.

  • Paper writing experience.

  • Experience with electrophysiology and laser scanning photostimulatin.

  • Knowledge of MATLAB.

Role/Level/Range: ACRP/03/MB

Starting Salary Range: $19.66 - $34.42 HRLY ($56,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
