ABOUT THE POSITION

The ACLU of Maryland exists to empower Marylanders to exercise their rights so that the law values and uplifts their humanity.

The Executive Coordinator and Board Liaison supports the goals of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors through research, writing, and administrative and logistical tasks and projects. The position manages the Office of the Executive Director, supporting the Executive Director as they lead the ACLU of Maryland internally, and represents the organization with external stakeholders including: member-donors, community partners, government officials, and the news media. The position facilitates Board and Board committee meetings, trainings, and retreats for the Board of Directors. This role works closely with senior leaders, managers, and members of the OPEIU, Local 2 bargaining unit, to coordinate work, and is an integral part of the internal work of the Administration department. The Executive Coordinator and Board Liaison is responsible for managing work of a timely, sensitive, and often confidential nature.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The information provided below encompasses the essential functions and capabilities linked with this position:

  • Manage the Executive Director's calendar, coordinate with appropriate staff, or conduct research to ensure background materials, talking points, etc. are provided in advance for public events and speaking commitments. Track and respond to communications to the Executive Director.

  • Provide administrative support to the Board and Board Committees, such as managing calendars, preparing agendas, taking minutes, and coordinating logistics for in-person and virtual board and committee meetings.

  • Serve as staff liaison to the board's nominating and governance committees, assisting with board member onboarding; along with supporting board projects as assigned.

  • Facilitate biweekly staff meetings; recommend and coordinate agenda items with managers and staff; ensure meetings remain on schedule and meeting agreements are met.

  • Provide project management support as needed to research and update content for ACLU-MD’s strategic planning work.

  • Coordinate organization-wide projects.

  • Perform work assigned and outlined in the annual organizational strategic operating plan, departmental operational plans and/or in project/programmatic area workplans in addition to the position’s other work.

  • Support strategic priorities on an ongoing basis.

  • Collaborate with the development team, as a support to the Executive Director in engaging with member-donors and other funders.

  • Maintain and manage regular communications channels with immediate supervisors, management, and coworkers to ensure the smooth and efficient operations of the organization.

    Education & Work Experience

  • A minimum of 4-6 years of experience in a similar position, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • High School Diploma or General Education Equivalent

    (Relevant education/experience may substitute for required education/experience at a rate of one-year relevant education/experience per year of required education/experience.)

  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work in an environment that respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances.

  • Act as a team player who inspires collaboration and is flexible.

    Technical Aptitude:

  • Maintain advanced working knowledge of office-related software, including Apple and Microsoft office products and any industry-specific technology or other internet research tools.

  • Excellent technical skills including use of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and database content management.

  • Familiarity and working knowledge of online tools/platforms such as Asana, 8x8, Box, and other technology programs used in furtherance of the role.

  • Excellent writing, research, and project management skills.

    Work Schedule & Travel Obligation:

  • Ability to occasionally travel locally, regionally, and nationally as needed.

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support six board meetings, one board retreat, and occasional special events organized by ACLU-MD.

  • Must reside in the state of Maryland or willing to relocate to the state of Maryland within 6 months of employment.

  • This a hybrid position, currently requiring two (2) days in office per week- this aspect is subject to change based on the needs of the organization.

    Management & Supervisory Responsibility

    This is an individual contributor, non-management position, and does not encompass supervisory responsibility.

  • Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, including by phone, e-mail, or in person.

  • Maintain sustained concentration on computer screens and use keyboards and a variety of peripherals.

  • Ability to push, pull, lift up to 25 pounds in the course of the workday in the normal performance of their duties .

    Preferred Considerations

    The following are the desired competencies, characteristics, or traits for this position:

  • 4-6 years of increasing responsibility providing administrative support for a senior executive.

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree.

  • T wo years’ relevant professional or volunteer experience with a civil rights or other advocacy organization

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

    The starting salary range for this position is $66,748- $85,750.
