General Summary/Purpose:

Assist in the evaluation and follow-up of arrhythmia patients in the inpatient and outpatient service, including patients with pacemakers (PPMs) and implantable defibrillators (ICDs). The Arrhythmia Nurse will work as part of a team of nurses and rotate responsibilities. These nurses report to the Arrhythmia Nurse Manager and Electrophysiology Attendings. In addition to these clinical responsibilities, the Arrhythmia Nurse will assist with research activities as needed. The individual in this position works under the direct supervision of an attending cardiologist physician who is a member of the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine, and reports directly to the Administrative Director of Invasive Cardiology for program operations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Requires administering medical interviews or surveys, explaining of medical tests and results. Coordination of patient care and follow-up for device clinics and arrhythmia clinics. Ability to skillfully assess device (pacemaker/ICD) function. Continued development of specialized skills in arrhythmia and device follow-up. Serve as a primary resource to cardiologist, primary physicians, nurse practitioners and caregivers regarding arrhythmia/devices. Maintains research-related documents and correspondence in a confidential manner, including informed consent forms, JCCI paperwork, and data from research. Interacts with research subjects either on the phone or in person, in a professional manner. Meets with research team on a regular basis and participate in troubleshooting and resolving issues for any research. Must be able to work and make decisions independently. Requires good time management skills in order to working on several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

Scope of Responsibility: Knows the key formal and informal goal of the division and clinical/research team and asks for guidance appropriately. Use own judgment in achieving goals of good research practices, good documentation and interactions with staff and health care professionals. Clinical decisions are to be made after discussion with the arrhythmia attending physicians.

Decision-Making: Ability to demonstrate good clinical judgment in patient management and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences and results having an impact on people in the workplace, patient care and potential or actual research subjects. Uses judgment to maintain and improve the quality of service within the arrhythmia service and research program. Clinical decisions are made in conjunction with one of the arrhythmia attendings.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • BSN, RN licensed in the state of Maryland

  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required

  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Acceptable completion of the JHH or BMC credentialing process is required within two weeks of start date.

  • Position requires excellent interpersonal skills, good oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with individuals of varying ages, educational, and socioeconomic levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current IBHRE certification

  • Two years of clinical experience in cardiology, knowledge of PPMs and ICDs preffered

  • Prior research experience is desired but not essential

Other Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with cardiology patients is desired but not essential.

  • Experience with databases cardiology and/or nursing is a plus.

  • Experience with computers including Excel, Word and Access is also a plus.

  • Good organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential.

  • The ability to multi-task is also important.

  • Familiarity with medical terminology essential.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
